About NEPA

NEPA, or the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, was enacted to require federal agencies to consider the environmental effects of their policies and projects. Each federal agency has their own implementation of NEPA that guides assessment of effects of their actions in ways that make sense for their agency.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development or HUD, implements NEPA with their regulations found at 24 CFR Part 58 . HUD’s NEPA regulation govern how projects funded by federal taxpayer money must comply with 39 executive orders, statutes, regulations, related laws and authorities, and development factors. HUD standards ensure that money is spent on projects that do not have adverse effects on low-income and minority populations, in building affordable housing and other urban investments.
